Il viaggio a Reims

Olivia makes her Opera Philadelphia premiere as Delia in Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims.

Exactly 200 years ago, Rossini dared to celebrate the coronation of Charles X with this ebullient satire of class, manners, and the timeless misery of long-distance travel. The production’s rich narrative and visual palette shade Rossini’s joyful musical canvas, blurring the line between life and art.

The Book of Never

The Book of Never

An extension of The Month of Moderns, Olivia sings with The Crossing again in New York City to perform Aaron Helgeson’s The Book of Never, with excerpts of Gavin Bryar’s new work, The Last Words of Immanuel Kant, as one of their featured soloists. She also joined them to record The Book of Never album.

The Book of Never, winner of a 2024 American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, is a choral exhortation based on the ancient Novgorod Codex – a wooden book of psalms from 999 A.D. owned by a monk who was sent as a missionary from Kyiv to the city of Novgorod (later annexed by Russia in 1478) and subsequently excommunicated for combining Pagan ritual with Orthodox Christianity. To save his culture, he poured layer after layer of wax over the book on which to write his liturgy, his alphabet, searing retaliations, and visions of the apocalypse.

David Lang’s Poor Hymnal

The Crossing on the road…

Why do some works demand we revisit them? The question is a larger one about how works become canonical – how they enter the culture and stay there. So, we offer a rare reprise of a work that, at its premiere, was already beloved by singers, and listeners.

The question in David’s thoughtful, moving, inspiring work?
“How do we treat each other?”

take nothing for the journey
take nothing for the road
take nothing for the way
take nothing for your journey

take nothing with you for the trip †

† David Lang, heard in poor hymnal

What do I know?

The world premiere of Sebastian Currier’s Mysterium, in which words of physicist Robbert Dijkgraaf and novelist Pia de Jong are in juxtaposition, questioning life – spans, purpose, brevity.  A backdrop of the great mysteries of the universe in Dijkgraaf, and of our everyday lives in de Jong. A photo reminds us of a distant, cherished memory, as the vast distances of the universe, its stars and beings, inspire awe.

With Linda Catlin Smith’s Folio in its North America premiere, a mediation on Emily Dickinson’s often profound fragments.

With night blue ink
I write a poem
about our love,
you and me,
now and then. †

of Linda Catlin Smith’s Folio

What belongs to me?

Olivia joins The Crossing in residence at UNC Chapel Hill – workshopping with Annie-B Parson and David Lang while preparing our concert there.A season of questions, launched in a concert asking how we relate to the Earth, to our bodies through the lens of capitalism, to our histories and myths, to our bodies through the lens of our fears and tensions, to each other.

Music of Ayanna Woods, David Lang, Shara Nova, and Gabriela Ortiz who find surprisingly optimistic angles in the corners of our questions.

Through our eyes, the universe sees itself.
We write its history, line by line, star by star, you and me. †

† Robbert Dijkgraaf, heard in the world premiere
of Sebastian Currier’s Mysterium, Feb 7.
